- Syntax highlighting, preferably with analysis (e.g. distinguish locals/globals)
- Undo/Redo, preferably unlimited
- Rectangular block handling
- Multiwindows support
- Folding
- Key mapping
- Script language
- Function/Class Browser
- Tagging (links to caller/references), preferably dynamic
- Chunking and dynamic pseudo-hypertext annotations (the ability to view several relevant parts of the same or other file as a set of adjacent windows. For example, all function calls in one windows and the function body in the other, adjacent window. Or documentation to the function in a windows adjacent to the function code, etc.
- Code Beautifiers
- Outlining (hierarchical view of the file)
- SCM/RCS/CVS interface
- FTP client
